Hanna Jovin is an award-winning filmmaker from Toronto, Canada, known for her work in both narrative and documentary filmmaking. She works across pre-production, production and post as a Screenwriter, Producer, Director, and Animator/Illustrator.
She graduated with honours from Toronto Metropolitan University with a degree in Film Production and has since worked with broadcasters like CBC Docs, BBC Earth, Channel 4, Paramount+, Discovery, and History Channel. Her 2017 short film Erika, set in 1940’s Nazi Occupied Bosnia, won multiple awards, including Best Film and Best Director at the TMU Film Festival, and later screened at the Toronto Lift-Off Film Festival.
In 2019, Hanna directed the six-part CBC Docs series Before and After, which explores transformative life events. The Cancer Diagnosis episode featuring Canadian Gymnast Tamara O’Brien has garnered over 2 million views on Youtube. Hanna was an Associate Producer on CBC’s 9/11 Kids, which received the Audience Choice Award at the 2020 Hot Docs Film Festival and Best Documentary at the 2021 Canadian Screen Awards.
She co-directed and produced The Middle, an experimental split screen film which was awarded best short film by the Regina International Film Festival, the Charlottetown Film Festival and the Silver Wave Film Festival. The Middle is currently streaming on CBC Gem as a part of Canadian Reflections, Canada’s longest running showcase of independent short films.
Her latest project, a short animated film funded by the Toronto Arts Council, SARAJEVO TWINS, is currently in production.
When she’s not busy working as an independent doc producer, or directing her passion projects, she can be found on a patio in Europe (sipping a cappuccino), at an art museum (she’s a sucker for a good gift shop) or at her local cinema (seeing a double feature, a fun blockbuster and a niche indie film).
